Wellington at Sand Hutton.
On the 25th of April 1941 this Wellington was returning from Ops to Kiel when the crew became lost. After circling beacons and
search light positions the crew were unable to locate their position, they then abandoned the aircraft when it ran out of fuel. The
aircraft crashed near Kissthorn Farm, Sand Hutton at 04.35hrs. The crew escaped serious injury.
Pilot - Sgt Arthur W I Jones RAFVR, aged 23 at the time, of Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire. Unhurt.
? - Sgt Brown RAF. Unhurt.
? - Sgt Barrass RAF. Unhurt.
? - Sgt Stewart RAF. Unhurt.
? - Sgt Strang RAF. Unhurt.
? - Sgt Galloway RAF. Slighty injured.
I have no info regarding detailed crash location.
Nothing more is known about the other airmen in the incident at Sand Hutton.
Arthur Jones would later become a F/Lt and was sadly killed when the Stirling he was flying crashed near Paris on 30th May 1942
killing the whole of his then crew; he also lost a brother on active service; Sgt David V Jones, 619 Sqdn, killed 13th August 1943
when his Lancaster struck another and crashed.
