Ju88 at Speeton, East Yorkshire.

On the 9th of July 1941 the crew of this aircraft and two others set out from their base at Schipol, Holland to carry out anti-shipping patrols between Whitby and Holy Island. All three aircraft would not make it back. All three aircraft flew in from the sea very low to avoid detection from radar. This and another were flying more or less together, both this and the other crashed behind Speeton cliffs, south of Filey. The other would crash at Sleights, Yorkshire and is detailed on my North Yorkshire Moors section to this website.

At just before mid-night this aircraft struck the top of a barn and crashed into a field next to Millholme Farm, Speeton killing all four airmen. The farmhouse roof is also believed to have been damaged, although no-one in the farm was injured. One source states the chimney stack on the house was damaged.

Pilot - Lt Helmut Sinz, killed.

Obs - Fw Harald Beuting, killed.

W Op - Ufz Wilhelm Quodt, killed.

Mech - Fw Otto Donder, killed.

I visited the area of the crash in October 2006, repaired damage to the farm house is still visible. The chimney stack to the right of the house appears to have been rebuilt, probably due to damage sustained when the aircraft struck it. Although not completely shown on this photograph, the barn roof to the left also appears to have had some post-war attention, given the whole of it has not been replaced with the sheeting the roof could also have sustained damage in the crash. The remains of barn could be seen out of camera shot to the right. Please note the farm and its land are private, no public access is available.
