The crew of this aircraft were undertaking a training flight and had taken off from Marston Moor. During the flight the starboard
inner engine failed, the pilot tried
to restart it but it was thought that in doing this he inadvertantly shut down the starboard outer engine by mistake. The aircraft
struck at a tree at 11.30hrs and crashed near Chapel Farm, Kilvington injuring those on board. The damage to the aircraft was Cat E2/FA.
Pilot - Sgt W S Allard RAF - serious injuries. Taken to Northallerton Hospital.
W Op/AG - Sgt F B Ward RAF - serious injuries. Taken to Northallerton Hospital.
AG - Sgt Joseph W Young RAFVR (1216336), of Kempston, Bedfordshire - injured.
F Eng - LAC D P MacDonald - injured. Taken to Lambert Memorial Hospital before being discharged to his station sick quarters.
A Sgt J W Young progressed to 35 Sqdn, a Pathfinder Unit. He lost his life on 17th April 1943 and was aged 22. He could well be the same person.
A F/O William S Allard RAFVR went missing off Burma on 22nd June 1946 when the Expeditor he was flying crashed into the sea. Nothing was ever found of the
aircraft. He is commemerated on the Singapore Memorial.
