Halifax at North Grimston.

The Halifax took off at 21.36 hrs from Linton and climbed to 8000 feet where severe engine problems occured. The bomb load was jettisoned at 22.00 hrs (location unknown), the crew baled out and the aircraft crashed near North Grimston at 21.15 hrs. 329 aircraft took off in the raid to Berlin on this night. The crew were:

F Eng - Sgt L G Donaldson, ok

Nav - Sgt R Falcus - ok.

Bomb Aimer - Sgt H J Burridge RAFVR (149497) - ok.

W Op - Sgt John Whelan RAAF - inj.

Air Gunner - Sgt G Campbell, inj.

Air Gunner - Sgt J R Sands, ok.


I have not yet info regarding detailed crash location, however the Yorkshire Air Museum quote a grid ref which plots to the area shown area shown on the above photograph.


On the 14th July 1943, the now Warrant Officer Toon was pilot of Halifax JD108 when it was shot down by a night fighter over Belgium. War Off Toon was killed, also on board were Sgt's Donaldson (evd), Falcus (evd), Campbell (pow) and P/O Burridge who was killed.
