Wellington at RAF East Moor.
This Wellington was damaged in a non-operational flying accident at East Moor, probably on landing after heavy rain
earlier in the day on the 6th of July 1942. The crew were all uninjured but the aircraft suffered Cat B/FA damage.
On this day, 158 Sqdn aircrew had the last of their conversion training to Halifax's.
This Wellington accident was therefore probably the last to happen 158 Squadron in Wellingtons.
Crew - unknown, ok.
The aircraft was built to contract B71441/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Weybridge and delivered to MU for acceptance in March
1941, it was then issued to the newly reformed 104 Sqdn at Driffield on 1st April 1941 before being transferred to 158 Sqdn at Driffield
on 25th May 1942. It moved with unit to East Moor on 4th June 1942. It suffered its mishap at East Moor and was given damage catagory
Cat. B/FA on 6th July 1942 (in the incident detailed above). Although still being researched, W5479 appears not to have flown
any operations with 158 Sqdn. It was repaired in works and after repair it was issued to 311 FTU
at Moreton in Marsh on 1st May 1943 when the unit was formed from 1446 FTF. It transferred later in the year to 3 OADU at Hurn
for preparation for a move to the Middle East. No record of aircraft's history in the Middle East is yet known other that
it was struck off charge on 27th April 1944.
