Halifax damaged by FLAK (returned to East Moor airfield).

On 10th of September 1942 this Halifax was on Ops to Dusseldorf when it was hit by flak in the Flight Engineers compartment, injuring the Flight Engineer in the shoulder. The crew continued their mission and landed back at base without further incident the following morning when the damage was reported as being Cat A(c)/FB. It was repaired and returned to service.

The aircraft was built to contract B982938/39 by E.E.C. Ltd at Salmesbury and delivered directly to 103 Sqdn at Elsham Wolds on 9th August 1942 but was transferred to 158 Sqdn at East Moor in mid August 1942. Following this flak damage damage was recorded as Cat. A(c)/FB. It was repaired on site and was returned to service by 13th September 1942. It suffered further damage (Cat. B/FB) on 6th October 1942 when on return from Ops to Aachen, the aircraft suffered an undercarriage collapse on landing at Manston. It was repaired in works and on completion of repair it was issued to 1659 HCU at Topcliffe on an as yet unspecified date in mid 1943. It was written off with Cat. E2/FA on 6th November 1943 when the aircraft suffered an engine fire which resulted in the break up of a wing and the resulting crash at Strandhall Farm, Rushen, Isle of Man.

F/Lt Sparke, Edlington, Aris, Watson and Middleton were lost on Ops to Turin on 11th December 1942 when Halifax DT579 crashed in France.

P/O Dawson was killed on 3rd April 1943 when Halifax DT635 was lost on Ops to Essen. The aircraft crashed at Monchengladbach. He is buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery. CWGC do not list his personal details.

Nothing more is known of the mid upper gunner.
