Halifax damaged by a night-fighter (returned to East Moor airfield).
At 23.53hrs on the 25th of June 1942 this Halifax took off from East Moor and set out for
Bremen. It was attacked by a night fighter before arriving in
the target area, severe damage was caused to the hydraulic system and wireless equipment and the dinghy was blown
out of its wing stowage. The bomb load was jettisoned over Oldenberb, 20 miles WNW of Bremen. The crew made a a safe return
to East Moor and landed at 04.37hrs on the 26th of June. Damage was declared immediately as Cat A(c)/FB.
The aircraft was built to contract B982938/39 by E.E.C. Ltd at Salmesbury and delivered to MU for acceptance in May 1942 and issued
to 158 Sqdn at East Moor during the second week of June 1942. Damage was recorded as Cat. A(c)/FB in the incident detailed above on 26th June 1942.
It was repaired at East Moor and returned to service with 158 Sqdn by 4th September 1942. It was then transferred to 1652 HCU at
Marston Moor in October 1942 and then to 1662 HCU at Blyton on an as yet unspecified date in 1943. It was struck off charge on 25th June
1944 and scrapped probably worn out.

On the 26/27th of July 1942, Sgt White (26 years old), Sgt Mogg (22 years old) and Sgt Wright (22 years old) were lost when Halifax W1164
was ditched in the North Sea. F/Sgt Blott and P/O Johnstone became POW. Their tour had been completed but they were doing an extra Op.
S/L Hewitt and Sgt Stewart became POW's on 1st August 1942 when their Halifax W1190 was shot down by flak and ditched.
