Dornier Do217 near Muston.

On the 3rd of February 1943 this aircraft and others flying with it were tasked with bombing Sunderland. At a similar time a Beaufighter of 219 Sqdn based at Scorton was on a training exercise and in the control of Seaton Snook. F/Lt John Willson and F/O Bunch were ordered to patrol at 11,000 feet. Somewhere near the North Sea coastline in the Middlebrough area contact was made. The Beaufighter gave chase and a short time later opened fire in the Filey area. Bunch's bullets found there mark and the enemy aircraft exploded near Muston, to the west of Filey, the aircraft crashed at Muston at 20.35hrs. Upon investigating the crash site no bodies were found, it was thought the crew had attempted to parachute out but had drifted out to sea and had drowned. No trace was ever found of them.
