Wellington near Muston Road, Filey.
On the 9th of August 1940 this aircraft ran out of fuel on return from Ops to Hamburg, the
pilot landed the aircraft in a field on what is now part of Filey School after they became lost. Cat R(b) damage being sustained. The aircraft
was removed and repaired. The crew are not though to have been injured.
The aircraft was built to contract B3913/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd at Weybridge and delivered to 38 Sqdn at Marham in June 1940.
Following the incident near Filey is was given Cat R(b), it was dismantled and repaired in works at Vickers. Its history from here becomes confusing.
Records show it was at OADF at Kemble in 1941 and then with 15 OTU at Harwell. It is more likely that this was the other way round;
the aircraft was at 15 OTU Harwell first,
which was the unit used to train crews for overseas operations, such as in the Middle East, etc, it was then transferred to OADF Kemble
with its crew for preparation for it's flight out the the Middle East. It was lost, sustaining Cat W damage on 16th June 1941
when it crashed in the sea near Kalafrana, Malta when on a delivery flight from Gibraltar to Malta. It stalled on approach to land at Luqa and crashed into the sea
killing all six of the crew, one of which was never found. His five crew mates are buried in Malta Naval Cemetery.
Pilot - Sgt Lupton, ok.
Rest of crew - Unknown.
Nothing of the aircraft is thought to be on the site at Filey as the school was built on the land.
