Halifax near Stillington.

The Halifax was returning from a mission to Duisburg when it was attacked by enemy at 04.33 hrs, It came down 2 miles north east of Stillington. The aircraft flew into slightly higher ground at Marton South Farm whilst coming into land in thick fog. It was returning from Operation Hurricane in which 1005 aicraft had taken part. The crew survived, they were :

Pilot - Sgt C W Krecker RCAF (maybe Krocker)

? - Sgt Leslie Tongue RAF

? - Sgt Robert J Nicholls RCAF

? - Sgt Russell E Chatfield RCAF, of Toronto, Canada.

? - F Sgt Gordon J Doyle RCAF, of Toronto, Canada.

? - F Sgt B D Walker RCAF

? - Sgt M A Orbach RCAF

? - WO2 C K Rowe RCAF

I do not know the exact location of the crash landing. Chorleys's 1944 Bomber Losses book state that it came down just off the airfield - not NE of Stillington but SE.

Doyle and Chatfield were both killed 28 Jan 1945 when their aircraft exploded on take off from Skipton on Swale.
