Vampire at Clifton airfield.
As such this is not an actual crash, but I have included it for its interest value. The very last military aircraft to
land at Clifton airfield almost ended in disaster. At an unknown date in 1956 a student pilot mistook York Minster for
Lincoln Cathedral, and confused Clifton airfield for that of his home base of Swinderby.
By this date the airfield had become disused and a wire fence was erected to divide the land up between two farmers.
The pilot landed the aircraft on the main runway, upon seeing that a fence now crossed the runway, he was forced to
somehow jump the aircraft over this fence. He did this without damaging the aircraft. The plane was later refueled and
he managed to take off on an old taxi track near where the gypsy site was later located, between Green Lane and Water
Lane. He returned to base without further incident.
Pilot - Unknown, ok.
