Whitley at Haxby, York.
On the 1st of December 1937 a Whitley was on a cross country exercise when it force-landed
in a ploughed field near Haxby, York. The aircraft was not too badly damaged and was listed as
having Cat. R(b) damage. The airmen on it were not believed to have been injured. This may well
be the first Whitley incident in Yorkshire. The airframe was dismantled and removed in sections.
The aircraft was built to contract 421118/35 by Armstrong Whitworth Ltd at Baginton and allotted to 10 Sqdn at Dishforth on 6th April
1937. The aircraft was delivered to 10 Sqdn on 30th April 1937. It suffered it's Cat.R/FA at Haxby and was dismantled on site and
delivered to 4 ED (Equipment Depot) on 21st December 1937 and repaired and issued to 166 Sqdn at Leconfield on 2nd August 1939
and moved with the unit to Abingdon on 17th September the same year. It was later transferred to 7 BGS at Stormy Down on 6th April 1940
when 166 Sqdn merged with 97 Sqdn to form 10 OTU, where it was coded -Q. For some reason it needed repair and was sent to
Airwork Ltd on 20th December 1940. It was next issued to 7 AGS again at Stormy Down on 31st July 19.41. It suffered a Cat. A(c)/FA on 11th
January 1942 when the tailwheel collapsed at Stormy Down and was ROS by Marshall's Ltd from Cambridge, the repair commencing on 14th January
1942. It was again returned to 7 AGS on 28.02.42. It was returned to Airwork Ltd for repair on 11th September 1942, reason unknown
and was ready and awaiting collection on 16th November 1942. It was flown to 44 MU at Edzell on 8th December 1942 and remained there
and was broken up for scrap and struck off charge on 6th November 1943.

Crash location not yet known. However I am told that a Whitley made a forced landing near the sewage works by the side
of the River Foss near Haxby Landing, Haxby on an unknown date; the crew were uninjured and the plane is believed to have
not been damaged seriously. This information came from a elderly Haxby resident and was recounted to me by Mr Mike Inkley.
