Halifax at Wombleton airfield.

On the 10th of December 1943 this aircraft made a heavy landing at Wombleton and swung off runway into mud. It became 1666 HCU's first casualty at Wombleton. No crew details are known as yet.

The aircraft was built to contract B982938/39 by E.E.C. Ltd at Salmesbury and was delivered as new to 77 Sqdn at Elvington during the first week of November 1942. Later in the month it transferred to 51 Sqdn at Snaith when the unit converted from Whitley V's where it carried the code "MH-J". It transferred to 1666 HCU at Dalton on 5th June 1943 when the unit formed and moved with the unit to Wombleton on 5th November 1943. In the incident detailed above it suffered Cat. A(c)/FA damage was repaired on site and returned to service by the end of 1943. It was written off at Wombleton with Cat. E2/FA damage on 14th August 1944 when it swung on landing at Wombleton whilst on circuit training. It ground looped taking off the undercarriage.
