Tiger Moth at Killerby Grange Farm, Cayton.

On the 28th of February 1939 the pilot of this aircraft took off from Desford in Leicestershire to undertake a training flight, flying to Brough and returning to Desford that night. During the flight up he became lost and on finding the coast-line followed it until his fuel was almost all used up. Left with no option but to land he put the aircraft down in a field near Killerby Grange Farm, Cayton, Scarborough without damaging it. The pilot had almost completed his ten week training course and this was his first cross country flight, he was uninjured. The aircraft remained on site over night until a team from Desford arrived, it is thought to have been refueled and flown out.

It is to be noted that this is not a "crash" as no damage was caused to either aircraft or property.

Pilot - Sgt Phillip Layshom RAFVR, of Nelson, Glamorgan. OK. He worked for Cardiff Prison at the time of this incident.

This incident was located in the Scarborough newspaper of the time and I believe this account is the first of its kind since it occured. As a result the serial number of the aircraft is not yet known.
