Kranich glider at Pickering Cricket Ground.
The crew on this glider were flying as part of a National RAF Gliding competition on this date in May 1958.
The glider had set out from South Cerney, Glocs at 12.30pm on the day of the crash and had landed at Edgehill, Warks some time later.
After a short while on the ground
they received and aero-tow and were airborne again. They headed north-east but some time later whilst in the Pickering area they
made an attempted force-landing on Pickering's cricket pitch when they encountered a
thunder storm in the area. During the attempted landing the aircraft skimmed over power lines and then clipped telephone lines
which run over the edge of the cricket field.
The glider made a crash landing on the square damaging the skids and making three gouges in the wicket.
The weekends cricket fixtures were cancelled. The two crew were uninjured.
