Avro 504 at Ampleforth Abbey.
Two other Avro 504's were dispatched from base to collect the two Collison brothers who were by now stranded at Ampleforth having no
aircraft to return. On the 12th of November 1918, one aircraft crashed into railings whilst landing the railings used to surround the
cricket field and were next to the old tramway below the Abbey (shown on the photograph below). The aircrafts back was broken. The pilot was
not believed to have been injured. The Abbey then had 4 RFC airmen to look after for the night and two crashed aircraft on their grounds.
A lorry was later sent to gather up the wreckage of both aircraft.
Pilot - Name unknown, ok.
Any information on this crash would be welcomed. The pavilion is still in existance as is the disused tramway bed - now a rough road.
Another source quotes 7th April 1919 as the crash date.
