Spitfire at Cayton.
The Scarborough ARP report I am blessed to have a copy of states that in the afternoon of the 27th of May 1942 six
planes were seen to fly very low over Scarborough, soon after a Spitfire force landed at Cayton after the engine seized; the pilot survived. Whilst no
mention of the specific aircraft or its Unit is noted here Spitfire BL801, of 308 Sqdn based at Hutton Cranswick was reported as
sustaining Cat.A(c)/FA on this date and thought research in the 308 Sqdn ORB the incident is noted there as occuring near Scarborough it is
probably correct to assume that all three incidents relate to the same occurance.
BL801 was built to contract 981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong at Castle Bromwich and delivered to 24 MU at Ternhill on 10th February
1942. It was issued to 317 Sqdn at Exeter on 20th March 1942 and then transferred to 308 Sqdn also at Exeter on 1st April 1942. It
moved with unit to Hutton Cranswick on 7th May 1942. It sustained Cat. A/FA damage in the incident near Cayton and was reported to have
been repaired in works before being returned to the Unit. It was sent to 76 MU Wroughton (Packing Dept.) on 8th November 1942 and
arrived at Palma 5th December 1942. It sent to the U.S.S.R. on 30th January 1943 and its fate there after is not known.
Pilot - Sgt Turek PAF, ok.
Sgt Turek had arrived from 58 OTU the previous day. Possibly Sgt Tadeusz Turek.
