Wellington near East Moor airfield.
On the 16th of March 1944 this aircraft took off from Chipping Warden at 19.30hrs for a night-navigation exercise.
During the flight and whilst in the York area the aircraft suffered an engine failure which resulted in loss of hydraulics. The engine was
feathered and the aircraft was attempting a flapless landing at East Moor. The aircraft overshot the end of the runway
into fields south of Strensall Lane at Low Carr at 22.30hrs. One member of crew was slightly injured. The aircraft was not repaired.
The aircraft was built to Contract 124362/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd at Chester and was awaiting collection in December 1942. It was
issued from MU store to 12 OTU Chipping Warden on an as yet unspecified date in 1943 and sustained Cat. E2/FA damage in the incident detailed
above on 16th March 1944.
