Mustang at Clifton Airfield.
On the 24th of August 1942 this Mustang swung on landing at Clifton, it collided with a Tiger Moth
already on the airfield. The Mustang was only slightly damaged (Cat A(c)/FA)) but the Tiger Moth was
written off with Cat E2/FA. The Mustang was repaired and returned to service with 268 Sqdn.
The aircraft was built to contract 15471 by North American at Inglewood/Dallas and shipped to the UK, arriving in January 1942.
After assembly and testing at an unspecidied MU it was issued to 268 Sqdn at Snailwell in March 1942. It moved with the unit to
Weston Zoyland on 20th May 1942 then returned with the unit to Snailwell on 2nd June 1942. It returned to Weston Zoyland with the
unit on 9th August 1942. It sustained Cat. A(c)/FA damage at Clifton in the incident detailed above and was repaired on site.
On completion of the repair it returned to 268 Sqdn at Weston Zoyland. It transferred in March 1943 to 2 Sqdn at Fowlmere and was
reported missing (Cat.E(m)) on 19th April 1943 when it failed to return from a shipping recce. flight.
