Spitfire at Thornaby Airfield.

On the 24th of November 1940 this aircraft was damaged at Thornaby Airfield after a crash landing following the aircraft running out of fuel. Cat R/FA damage being sustained.

The aircraft was built to contract 19713/39 by Supermarine at Woolston and after delivery to MU was issued to 64 Sqdn in September 1940. It moved on quickly to 54 Sqdn where it was damaged in this incident above. It was then repaired and returned to service with 54 Sqdn before moving in early 1941 to 41 Sqdn, followed by spells with 452 Sqdn, 313 Sqdn it finally ending up at 61 OTU where it suffered a final Cat E2/FA accident on the 25th February 1943, it was then struck off charge.
