Vampire at Thornaby Airfield.

On the 28th of February 1954 this aircraft belly-landed at Thornaby after the under-carriage jammed. The aircraft was deemed beyond repair, Cat 5/FA damage being recorded.

the aircraft was built to contract 6/ACFT/1387 by E.E.C. at Salmesbury and delivered to the RAF in June 1949. It remained in MU storage until issued to 249 Sqdn at Habbaniya, Egypt in February 1950. At some point the aircraft was transferred to 213 Sqdn at Deversoir, Egypt. 213 Sqdn ceased operating Vampire FB.5's in April 1952 and the aircraft passed into the hands of 32 Sqdn who were also based at Deversoir. At an unknown date it was returned to the UK and eventually was placed on charge with 608 Sqdn.
