Vampire at Thornaby Airfield.

On the 3rd of September 1950 this aircraft was making a low approach to land at Thornaby when it struck the boundary hedge. The aircraft ran onto the airfield but was seriously damaged resulting in being written off, Cat E2/FA damage being sustained. It does not appear to have been struck off charge though as it was eventually transferred to the Ministry of Supply on 19th April 1955.

The aircraft was built to contract ACFT/5421 by E.E.C. at Salmesbury and delivered to the RAF in April 1947. It remained in MU storage until issued to 73 Sqdn at Takali, Malta in August 1948. At some period was returned to the UK and found it's way to 608 Sqdn in December 1949 when this unit started to convert to Vampire F.3's.
