On the 24th of August 1941
this aircraft swung wildly on take off from Thornaby causing trainee pilot to lose control.
The aircraft crashed and burnt out within airfield boundary. The fate of crew is not known but it is thought they escaped without injury. The aircraft was written off Cat E2/FA.
The aircraft was purchased from Lockheed-Vega at Burbank, California, by the British Purchasing Commission. After shipping to the
UK and acceptance at MU in September 1940 it was issued to 206 Sqdn at Bircham Newton in late 1940. It was later transferred to 407 Sqdn
in early 1941 and then onto 6(C)OTU at Thornaby later that year.
