Cessna near Swainby.

On the 27th July 2004 those on board this aircraft were undertaking a navigation exercise from Bournemouth to Teesside Airport. After approx 2 hrs 40 min of flight and whilst 16 miles SSE of Teesside airport the engine started to run roughly. Carburettor Heat was selected and the engine ran smoothly for a short while before again running rough and losing power. With height being lost Teesside ATC contacted and QDM given by ATC. Approximately 5 minutes after initial loss of power the engine stopped and the pilot declared a 'MayDay'. A suitable field was selected for a forced landing with full flap but the aircraft touched down half way along the field at 70 kts, it ran through a hedge at 40 kts, which caused the nose wheel to collapse and the aircraft came to rest 10 metres into the next field at 15.45hrs. The crew of 2 exited uninjured.

Icing of the carburettor causing engine failure was suspected for the engine problems (something this writer's motor car suffered from !). Cat 4/FA damage was sustained.

Pilot - ok.

Passenger - ok.
