On the 10th of April 1941 this
this aircraft was damaged in a wheels-up forced landing near Marske. The pilot became lost and was unable
to work out his position in industrial haze after the wireless had failed. The pilot was uninjured was
following the incident was to be given further dual instruction in naviagtion.
The aircraft was built to contract 964753/38 by the Canadian Car & Foundry Corporation and shipped to the UK in July 1940.
After assembly and acceptance at MU was issued to 1 Sqdn at Wittering in October 1940. (According to 1 Sqdn records,
they never operated Mk. X Hurricanes though). It was transferred at an unspecified date to 55 OTU where it suffered this Cat
E/FA accident. Following this mishap it was deemed rebuildable so was transferred to Rolls Royce in April 1941 and rebuilt
as a Mk.IIA DG632 to contract B116153/41 in May 1941, after which it was shipped to Egypt at an unspecified date and
issued to 94 Sqdn who were operating out of a variety of desert airfields. It was finally written off as Missing - Cat E(m) on
14th January 1942.
Pilot - P/O G C S MacNamara RAF, ok. At the time of this incident he had a total of 96 flying hours, only 7 of which were on the Hurricane.
