Hudson at Thornaby.

On the 30th of March 1940 the crew of this aircraft were undertaking an air test. Two other passengers were being taken along for a ride. Whilst on approach to land back at Thornaby a fire broke out in the port engine, it was put out but before the aircraft was on the ground it broke out again. At 14.20hrs the Hudson struck a construction plant at the airfield's perimeter and was badly damaged in the resulting crash. Police records list six on board the aircraft, two were slightly injured. The aircraft burnt out, Cat W/FA damage reported.

The aircraft had a short life with 220 Squadron, it was built to contract 791587/38 by Lockheed at Burbank, California and shipped to the UK, assembled, tested and issued to 220 Squadron in September 1939.

P/O Petrie and Lawry went missing on 24th April 1940 and is listed on the Runnymede Memorial. they were aged 21 and 20 respectively. Merrick and Wilson were on the same aircraft in which the two pilots went missing, Merrick was aged 19
