Hurricane near Lingdale, Guisborough.

The Hurricane crash landed near Lingdale after an engine failure which on a training flight, the pilot survived.

The aircraft, following MU acceptance, was delivered to 56 Sqdn at Martlesham Heath in late 1939, it moved onto 242 Sqdn at Martlesham Heath in Jan 1940 when the unit re-equipped from Fairey Battles. It was then transferred back to 56 Sqdn in February 1940. They then moved to North Weald from where it was transferred to 615 Sqdn who were based at Abbeville, France in April 1940, when this unit were re-equipping from Gloster Gladiators. It appears like it was used in the Battle of France in May 1940 before returning with 615 Sqdn to Kenley. At an unknown date it was transferred to 55 OTU, and following repair from this accident it was transferred to 1 AAS before being struck off charge on the 20th November 1941.

Pilot - Sgt D L S Wood RAF - ok.

I have yet to locate the site of this forced landing.
