Anson at Thornaby Airfield.

On the 1st of November 1939 this aircraft's undercarriage collapsed on landing at Thornaby, Cat R/FA damage being reported. The crew escaped injury. The poor state of the runway was blamed for the crash.

The aircraft was built to contract 497339/36 by A.V. Roe Ltd at Woodford and delivered to 224 Sqdn on 2nd July 1937. It was returned to A.V. Roe Ltd for modifications on 20th May 1938 and returned to the squadron on 31st May 1938. It was then transferred to 220 Sqdn as NR-J on 27th June 1939. Following this incident it was inspection by 47 MU on 7th December 1939. It was then taken to Martin Hearns Ltd on 15th January 1940 (one presumes repair was beyond MU capabilities). After repair it was issued to Burtonwood 29th December 1940 for transfer overseas and was transferred to RCAF 22nd February 1941.
