Anson at Thornaby Airfield.

On the 25th of September 1939 this Anson took off at 16.20hrs to undertake a convoy escort of Convoy FN10, on its return at 19.45hrs the aircraft overshot its landing and damaged the undercarriage. It was struck off charge on the 22nd of November 1939, given this it may not have been repaired.

The aircraft was built to contract 353855/34 by A.V. Roe at Woodford and delivered to 220 Sqdn on 7th September 1936 and coded 220-E. It was transferred to RAE at Farnborough on 10th August 1937 and then went back to 220 Sqdn on 9th September 1937. It was taken to Avro's on 31st August 1938 and then returned to 220 Sqdn on 23rd September 1938 and was now coded HU-E. It suffered this accident on 25th September 1939, Cat R/FA damage reported.


Another source lists the pilots initials differently : P/O C W McNeil and F/O C P Wright.
220 Sqdn would re-use the same squadron code NR-E, as happened at every squadron. Later in the was 220 Squadron's Hudson NR-E would crash into Captain Cooks Monument, near Great Ayton killing three of its crew. This crash is also detailed on this website.
