Anson at Thornaby Airfield.

On the 28th of September 1939 this aircraft overshot a landing at Thornaby and ran through a hedge. Cat R/FA damage being sustained.

This aircraft was built to contract 353855/34 by A.V. Roe Ltd at Woodford and delivered to 220 Sqdn on 9th September 1936 and coded 220-N. It was returned to A.V. Roe Ltd for modifications on exactly two years later in 1938. It was then returned to 220 Sqdn on 26th September 1938 and given the code HU-N and then NR-N. Following this incident it was dispatched to Martin Hearns Ltd for repair on 13th November 1939. On its return to service it was issued to Burtonwood on 11th February 1941 for preparation for shipping overseas. It sailed for 12 FTS Canada on 13th March 1941 in S.S. Horda which was sunk by a U Boat 1000 miles W of Bishop Rock on 24th March 1941 (and as such was lost on that date).

Dennis Holbeche was to be killed in another Thornaby based accident on 11th June 1940, detailed on this website, he was 26 years old and is buried in Thornaby Cemetery.
