On the 19th of June 1940 the crew of this Anson took off from RAF Thornaby to undertake convoy escort duties.
Soon after take off it struck HT cables between Brotton and Moorsholm, the aircraft crashed into the ground and overturned
at 17.20hrs. The crew were taken to North Ormesby Hospital where one of the pilots died later three days later.
Cat W/FA damage being sustained.
The aircraft was built to contract 766119/38 by A.V. Roe Ltd at Newton Heath and delivered to 608 Sqdn in late 1939.
Pilot - Sgt Leslie B Walpole RAFVR, aged 22, of Birmingham, buried Castle Bromwich. died 19th June 1940.
Pilot - P/O B Duncan RAF, injured.
? - Sgt O Shepherd RAF, injured.
? - AC George E Lumley RAF, injured.
I have not yet searched for remains of this aircraft. The police report puts it as 1/4 mile SE of East Pasture Farm, North Skelton.
A W Op F/O George E Lumley of Billingham was killed on 16 September 1944, aged 32, buried Darlington. It
is thought that he is the same man who was on board the Anson which came down near Brotton.
