Blackburn aircraft near Saltburn.

On the 24th of May 1910 this aircraft was been test-flown on the sands between Redcar and Saltburn. On this run, whilst flying at a height of only two or three feet a turn was made, the aircraft sideslipped and it skidded into a hole on the beach at Marske. The tyre of one of the wheels came off and though the pilot cut the ignition he was thrown from the aircraft. The aircraft damaged its left wing, and was probably destroyed. The pilot was not injured.

Pilot - Mr Robert Blackburn, of Leeds. Ok.

It is believed that this was Robert Blackburns first aircraft, it was an odd looking machine, resembling a three-wheeled car with wings and a tail. The engine was linked to the propeller with a chain drive. A photograph of the aircraft appeared in Flight magazine 25th May 1939 but it is believed to be copyrighted.
