Whitley off Scarborough.

On the 24th of June 1941 a Scarborough ARP warden's diary makes mention to four Canadian airmen being shot down and having to force land near the town on this date. They were returning from a raid on Wilhelmshaven.

What this entry refers to is a Whitley being ditched 30 miles off Scarborough at 04.15hrs on the 23rd of June 1941. Four of the crew survived, the fifth sadly drowned after being unable to inflate his Mae West after the dinghy capsized. The four survivors were rescued some time later at 09.00 hrs on the 24th by HMS Dane, they were then tranfered to a fishing boat making for Scarborough
