The Meteor was on a GCI sortie when both engines failed. The pilot tried to ditch the aircraft in Saltwick Bay in the early hours of the morning. His navigator had baled out over the sea. The pilot attempted to swim ashore but drowned, his body was found later, the navigator was never found. Huge air and sea searches took place over the next days and some of the aircraft was salvaged. Some of this aircraft was also found on land near Smailes Moor Farm, Fylingdales in the Moors.

Pilot - P/O Brian Hamilton RAF (3129683), aged 20, of Northwood, Middlesex. Buried Leeming Churchyard, Yorkshire.

Nav - Sgt Desmond Reginald Sturgess RAF (3504412), aged 21, of Newbury, Berkshire. Missing. He was born on 29th July 1930.
