Mosquito off Filey.

On the 4th of August 1945 the crew of this Mosquito were on a cross country training flight and had been airborne for almost two hours. Whilst flying near Filey an eyewitness heard engines spluttering, the aircraft crashed into the sea around midnight in Filey Bay killing the two crew. Although never proven it was thought the aircraft suffered engine failure and the pilot lost control. Filey lifeboat put to sea with a crew of six in, then, a record time of ten minutes. At 03.00 hrs wreckage was located but there was no sign of the airmen. Since the crash no trace has ever been found of the two airmen.
