Meteor off Cloughton Wyke.

On the 14th of Febraury 1951 a two seater Meteor took off from Driffield at 10.20 hrs for a local flying exercise, at between 10.30 and 10.45 hrs it was seen to fly into the sea off half a mile off Cloughton Wyke. The engine had appeared to cut out, although no reason was ever fully established. A search was launched by Scarborough's new lifeboat, and, as the local press recounts, two hours later oil was spotted on the surface and some wreckage was picked up. The two airmen were killed, I do not know if these airmen were ever found but when the Form AM1180 was written they were still reported as missing. Engine trouble was thought to have caused the loss.
