Grunau Baby and Scud II at Sutton Bank.

On Sunday the 31st of July 1938 two gliders collided at 300 feet over Sutton Bank. One machine, the Grunau, had its tail section torn off, it immediately flipped onto its back and crashed. The pilot of this machine, Mr W Sharpe, put the machine into a dive, it crashed into fir trees near Sutton Bank. He climbed down a tree to safety. The other machine, the Scud II, had its front end torn off in the impact. The pilot, Mr W Horsefield, was left with his feet dangling out of the machine. He manged to land the glider in bracken near the gliding club. Both men survived. The incident was witnessed by club member Mr Angus Pick who was undertaking an "advanced course" at the time. Pick was killed in an accident in 1939.
