On the 13th May 1934, a Sunday, the Bradford Gliding Club had arranged a meet at Sutton Bank, a number of gliders were taking part in flights upto when this accident occured. This glider had been lauched by a catapult, when lauched a very strong gust of wind caught the machine, it side-slipped and dipped towards the ground. The pilot reported that control was hard due to the strong wind and that the nose would not stay down. As he nearer the end of the cliff at Roulston Scar he was left with no option but to force land the glider before he got to the edge of the grassed area. In this area a number of spectators had positioned themselves in the space and as the glider came down there was panic to escape being hit, everyone but two women were able to do this. Sadly the two women were struck and received serious injuries. The pilot was also injured slightly. Following the accident, PC Warriner of Thirsk and RAC Guide Wilson performed first aid on the injured. On the arrival of Dr H Addison of Thirsk, he admitted them all to the Lambert Memorial Hospital in the town where they were treated and allowed to go home afterwards. The glider was owned by Mr J P Watson.
