Whitley on Scrafton Moor.

On the 16th of January 1942 the crew of this Whitley were returning from Ops when the wireless failed. They then became lost because of bad weather over Yorkshire they flew into the Yorkshire Dales. The aircrafts homing wireless set also failed but the crew were able to pick up a QDM signal, however this signal was not intended for their aircraft.and on breaking cloud they were unable to clear the high ground they were flying towards. The pilot force landed on this high ground on Scrafton Moor, some miles south-west of Leyburn, it was not seriously damaged and it is believed to have been recovered and repaired later. The crew were uninjured.

Pilot - Sgt Alfred G Hughes RAF (1257325), ok

Crew - Unknown, ok.

I did a quick search of the area in July 2006 but found nothing. Ken Reast tells me that a Whitley force landed in a field nearer to Scrafton and was later refueled and flown out from the field. This incident could well refer to one of the two listed as being higher up the moor on Scrafton Moor.
The aircraft was later lost in the Atlantic on 31st October 1942.
