Hurricane on Cotherstone Moor, Bowes.

On the night of 7th of May 1941 this aircraft was returning from an operational patrol off Glasgow when the wireless failed. Unable to obtain any homing barings the pilot became lost and when the aircraft ran out of fuel he abandoned the aircraft. It crashed on Cotherstone Moor at around 03.00hrs. It is believed he landed safely. It was later stated that the pilot should have tested the radio sooner than he did after leaving the base, by the time he tested it he was out of range.

Pilot - Sgt Alan H Haley RAAF (Aus 402054), aged 24. Uninjured.

The pilot was killed flying in India on 1st January 1943, he is buried in Ranchi War Cemetery. He has previously served in Malta in late 1941.

I have yet to locate the crash site but know where it came down.
