On the 26th of Feb 1941, 126 aircraft of various types were tasked to bomb two targets in Cologne, 106 aircraft managed to bomb. Of the aircraft that didn't bomb, one, a Whitley returned early after it had suffered generator failure on the flight over the North Sea. It had taked off from Linton on Ouse at 19.01hrs and was returning there when it was to crash in bad light. The Whitley flew into fairly flat high ground west of West Agra Farm, Healey in poor visibility. The crew were lucky and escaped without serious injury. The aircraft crashed into deep snow, the impact caused the incendaries to ignite but the snow soon put the fire out. The crew were:
Pilot - Sgt T C Wall RAFVR (740012) - Unhurt.
Pilot - Sgt Walker RAF - Unhurt.
Sgt Chappell RAF - Unhurt.
Sgt Jackson RAF - Unhurt.
Sgt Chapman RAF - Unhurt.
William Chorley quotes, in his losses book for the period, the crash site as 40 miles east of this and being on the North Yorkshire Moors and close to the Thirsk to Helmsley A170 road near Sutton Bank. The error I believe is not generated by him but a reseacher before him again not converting the old Cassini grid ref before plotting it to a modern map.
