Tiger Moth on Knipe Hill, Stainmore.

On the 8th of February 1951 the pilot of this aircraft was undertaking a training flight when either a snow storm blew in, or he flew too far in a snow storm. The aircraft crashed in the Stainmore area. Michael Hurst's "Lake" District book on aircraft crashes has probably the most detailed reference to this incident. He stated that the impact broke the pilots harness and flung him out into a snow drift. Suffering only ankle injuries he was able to make his way off the hillside to a road and was able to gain a lift to hospital from a passing motorist. he also states the pilot lived in the area. Mr Hurst quotes Knipe Hill as the crash location, in January 2008 correspondance with him found that a number of his map references in the book are deliberately incorrect. This map reference he quotes has been searched by a number of other researchers but no wreckage located.

Pilot - F/O W S Bateson RAFVR, slightly injured.

I have yet to locate the crash site.
