Airacobra at Scalebar Force, Settle.

On the 22nd of November 1942 this aircraft suffered engine failure whilst the pilot was undertaking a cross-country navigation exercise. The pilot kept control of the aircraft and managed to glide down for some way before baling out. Sadly he was too low for his parachute to work and was killed. The aircraft crashed nearby into a sink hole in the limestone burying much of the front end of the aircraft.

Pilot - Lt Cecil Rhodes USAAF, killed.

This pilot is remembered on Settle War Memorial located in the church.

I have yet to locate the crash site.

Some years ago LAIT dug the site and recovered a number of cockpit items. Nick Wotherspoons LAIT website shows photograps of these finds.
