Bobcat at Swinithwaite, Wensleydale.

On the 29th of May 1944 this crew of two were undertaking a local flying exericse out of Scorton, the pilot was to practive flying on instruments. They had taken off at 10.50hrs and whilst flying very low in the Wensleydale area the aircraft struck a tree in Swinithwaite and crashed soon after, cartwheeling into the ground. The aircraft was destroyed and the crew of two were killed at 11.25hrs. Earlier in the morning this aircraft had been flown by another crew of two for just over an hour with no problems reported. The Unit had been at Scorton about three weeks prior to this incident and was probalby their first fatal accident, they were almost certainly training for their eventual move at the end of June into the European Theatre of Operations.

Pilot - 2nd Lt Gale R Allman USAAF (0-748884), killed.

Radio Op - F/O Walter J Samus USAAF (T-180006), killed.

I have yet to visit the crash site but the location is known of on private land near the village. Fellow Yorkshire researchers Ken Reast, Dick Barton and Albert Pritchard located the site with permission from the land owners some years ago. The tree whilst was struck still shows damage to this day.
