On the 21st of April 1944 the crew of this Wellington took off from Seighford at 10.40hrs for a navigational training flight over the north of England. The weather turned poor, with visability being reduced due to cloudy conditions. The aircraft flew into Whernside at 16.15hrs and killed all but one on board. This incident is well covered in numerous books, I do not wish to copy these works.
Pilot - F/O Ernest M Barrett RAFVR, aged 29, of Coulsdon, Surrey. Buried Blacon Cemetery, Chester. Husband of Jane Ridley Barrett. He was a civil engineer prior to being called up and he also played Rugby Football for Birkenhead Park.
Nav - F/Lt Edward Alderson RAFVR, aged 28, of Hetton le Hole, Sunderland. Buried Hetton Cemetery, Sunderland. (Other researchers quote him to have been the co-pilot).
Nav - Sgt Philip E Lomas RAFVR, aged 21, of of Tredington. Buried Shipston on Stour Cemetery, Warwickshire.
BA - F/O Robert G C Brodie RCAF, aged 21, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Buried Blacon Cemetery, Chester.
W Op / AG - Sgt Norman Skirrow RAFVR, aged ? Of Ripon, Yorkshire, buried Ripon Cemetery, Yorkshire.
W Op / AG - Sgt Ronald C Holmwood RAFVR, aged 19, of Hounslow. Buried Heston Churchyard, Middlesex.
Rear Gunner - Sgt J Marks, slightly injured. A Sgt Joseph Marks RAFVR would be lost on 14th Oct 1944 serving with 626 Sqdn, this could well be the same man.
