On an unknown date in 1929 an unknown aircraft is believed to have crashed on the east side of Great Whernside. It is not known whether this was a civilian or a military aircraft. The only Unit in Yorkshire at this time was 26 Sqdn flying from Catterick using Atlas aircraft. It is assumed therefore to be one of their aircraft if it was military I am told that an article in the Dalesman magzine in the 1960s mentioned this incident and credited it as a civilan aircraft. Great Whernside is known to have been an early sailplane / gliding site for civilians and it could also infact be a glider. About the only confirmed thing is that workers constructing the Scarhouse reservoir are said to have witnessed the incident and gone up to assist in a rescue.
