On the 4th of October 1942 this aircraft collided with another Mustang whilst they were performing a dogfight after ground strafing in an army Co-operation exercise on the nearby training grounds. The pilot of this aircraft lost control and the aircraft crashed at 11.15hrs, he sadly was killed. It is thought the other unknown Mustang and pilot flew off and returned to base.
Pilot - S/Ldr Robert Gray RAF (72081). Aged ? Of ? Buried Catterick Cemetery, Yorkshire. (C of E sec, Row O, Grave 6).
The pilots headstone at Catterick Cemetery.
I searched for this crash site in September 2006 but failed to find any trace of the aircraft. Given the area I searched was very close to a road if it did crash there then the recovery operation would have been easy and therefore locating it on the ground today is going to be hard. Since this visit I have learnt that it crashed into a boggy area.
