On the 15th of December 1942 this and a number of other Mustangs of the same unit took off to undertake a formation flying exercise. Weather was poor and the formation leader became lost. The main formation continued to fly around trying to locate their position. One aircraft parted the main formation having been low on fuel by now, the pilot tried to find somewhere to land but when he realised this was not going to be done because of the terrain, he climbed his aircraft and baled out. The aircraft crashed into Fountains Earth Moor and the pilot landed nearby none the worse.
Pilot - P/O William J Bodington RAF, ok.
My wife and I visited the crash site in April 2006.
