Mustang near Langcliffe Scar, Settle.

On the 14th of October 1942 this aircraft flew into high ground near Langcliffe Scar, to the east of Settle at 11.35hrs. The pilot was undertaking a navigational training flight when, 35 minutes into the flight he encountered bad weather and flew into high ground sadly killing him and destroying the aircraft.

Pilot - F/O Herbert W P Hainey RAF (119025), aged 23, of Oregon, USA. His body was later returned home to the USA. He is also commemerated on the Maidenhead Register.


The names of this pilot and another USAAF pilot killed in the Settle area are recorded on the towns War Memorial located in the church


I have yet to locate the crash site.
