Moth on Cross Fell.

On Tuesday the 21st of April 1936 this aircraft took off from Doncaster at 17.00hrs and headed in a north-westerly direction with the intension of flying to Kingstown (Carlisle). The aircaft had begun its journey at West Malling and had probably landed at Doncaster to re-fuel. Almost clear of the hills, the aircraft crashed into the side of Cross Fell aprox 60 feet below the summit and overturned. In all probablity the pilot died soon after of his injuries. It was a number of days before the aircraft was located and the body of the pilot taken away for burial. The crash investigation later found that the altimeter had been set incorrectly.

Pilot - Mr James J Moffat, aged 20, of ? Killed, buried (location unknown).

Whilst I have not searched for the remains of this aircraft as yet it is known that small parts do still exist at the crash site among rocks. The photgraph above was taken on a misty day and shows the general lump that is Cross Fell.
